american consulate

The consulate, also called a consular office, is a representative office of a country in another state with a main function

administrative, but also for cultural and economic promotion, as well as
to protect the citizens of the country you represent.

In this post we will find out everything about the American consulate in SP.Its activities are governed by the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, signed on April 24, 1963. There are four types of consuls:

  • General Consul
  • The Honorary Consul
  • The Deputy Consul
  • The Consular Agent

The difference in relation to the embassy is that the consulate does political activity International.

Let’s see in detail what a consulate is and how it works and which services it offers to the citizens of the country it represents abroad.

How the consulate general works

As we said, a consulate general has administrative functions, but also, to protect the citizens of your country in case your rights are violated abroad or their freedom is limited or private in the state in which they are the consulate general is based.

In addition, in an emergency, it guarantees assistance in finding family members, in succession procedures abroad and in repatriation.

Say, more “peaceful” conditions, the normal functioning of a general consulate consists of:

  • training, transcription and issuance of civil status documents;
  • publication and celebration of weddings;
  • issuing and renewing passports;
  • issuing entry visas;
  • issuing and renewing identity cards (although not all consulates do);
  • acts of citizenship and military service;
  • deeds, wills, signed authentications, translations, legalizations and customs certifications related to repatriation;
  • acts related to the electoral service; pension practices; social assistance, cash benefits, pharmaceutical and health assistance for compatriots in need.

In case of absence of the consul general, the administration passes to the hands of the vice consul.

What the honorary consulate is and how it works

Unlike the consulate general, the honorary consulate is a representative office administered by citizen of the host state, called an honorary or elected consul, who operates at the request of the country in question after receiving an authorization called exequatur (translated “Christian”: act with which a state accepts and recognizes a foreign consul, admitting that he performs his duties in the state’s territory, enjoys the immunities and prerogatives that belong to him and carries out a productive activity with legal effects in the ordination of the state itself).

So, for example, a Brazilian honorary consul in Argentina will be a
Argentine invested in that position (that is, with an exequatur).

The functions are bureaucratic, but not under international law.

It must guarantee citizens the protection of their interests, following the principles of equality, impartiality, efficiency and transparency, with respect to fundamental rights and personal freedom.

It intervenes, for example, in cases of death, accident, serious illness, arrest or detention, acts of violence, assistance in the event of serious crises (natural disasters, civil unrest, armed conflicts etc.), issuing travel documents emergency cause loss or theft of passport.

It can perform the functions of an embassy if a state does not have that kind of diplomatic representation in that country.

In the United States, obtaining a visa, of all types of visas, is a privilege, not a right.

Find out where to start on American visas:

The B-1 visa is a temporary tourist visa (non-immigrant visa), which can freely travel (and move around the country) in the United States for 6 months and 10 years.

Get B-1 Visa: 4-Step Summary.

Step 1: Fill out form DS-160

You can download and complete this DS-160 form here.

This form, written in English, can only be completed online and in English. You will also need to upload a photo ID.

Please note that the DS-160 is quite long, your questions are precise (length of stay planned, trips abroad in the past 5 years) and you must fill it out carefully.

After the questionnaire is completed, you will have to validate it and sign it electronically.

You will need to print the confirmation page with the barcode and the confirmation number required to make an appointment with the United States Embassy in São Paulo.

Doubts?

Step 2: make an appointment with the US Embassy in São Paulo

When accessing the site, you will register and obtain a PIN identification number, which will allow you to make an appointment over the Internet or by phone.

If you are going to the USA with your family, you will need to make an appointment
consultation for all family members at the same time.

Step 3: pay registration fees for the B-1 visa

Getting a visa is a privilege, that privilege also has a cost. THE
fees are $ 160 per person.

The most practical is to pay this amount by bank transfer.

Please note that if your visa is not accepted by the authorities, you will lose all that amount.

We advise you to make a copy of this email, as you will be prompted
during the consultation.

Step 4: the meeting at the United States Embassy

The Embassy is located at Rua. Henri Dunant, 500 – Santo Amaro, São
Paulo – SP, 04709-110.

  • Do not forget to attend the interview with all documents.
  • The interview does not usually take long, but if you are going to work in the United States, the tendency is that the interview will be very long.
  • The response time varies widely, it can take only a few days, as it can take many months.
  • It is only after the order is processed that it is possible to know if it has been approved.
  • Never go out making plans and buying anything before your visa is confirmed.

Documents to bring

  • Your valid passport.
  • A 5 × 5 passport photo (you can take it on the spot).
  • Confirmation of your payment.
  • The confirmation page of the DS-160 form with the barcode.
  • All the proofs that you will have in your possession of the funds necessary for your stay (bank statements, stock certificates, etc.).
  • Anything that can prove your return to Brazil (deed, employment contract, company balance sheet).
  • Additional information about your itinerary.

If you do not have all of these documents on hand on the day of the consultation, at least remind them to clearly state their situation and plans.

You will know if the visa was granted by email. So, it is appropriate that schedule your trip after confirming your visa entitlement.

This way you will avoid problems and expenses that can be difficult to reverse and recover the money invested.
